Our grey coir matting cut to size is of the highest quality, as we source it from a top quality assured family run mill factory in Kerala, India. As well as quality, our grey coconut matting is the lowest priced around as you are buying it direct from us (the wholesaler), we are so confident that our coir mats are the lowest priced that we guarantee to beat any price like for like.
Our coir mat is a totally natural product. As such, we can never guarantee 100% uniformity. Pieces of coconut husk sometimes appear in the pile, and loose pieces of coconut fibre will shed from the pile at first. If a husk falls out of the pile, this can be simply amended by untwisting surrounding tufts to fill in the hole. This is totally normal with all coconut mats and not a fault. Variations in the colour of the mats will also occur from season to season with the coconut harvest. These variations are part of the beauty of a genuinely natural product.
As coir matting is a 100% natural product it is prone to shedding throughout its lifetime. As such Coir will require regular brushing, particularly in the first 6-8 weeks, to prevent any loose bristles being tracked from the surface of the matting onto the surrounding floors and carpets. (We would recommend brushing about once a week after it has settled).
COIR MATTING CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Please see below for advice on cleaning and maintaining your coir matting.
• Due to its rubber backing, water may not completely drain from the matting – over time, trapped moisture can lead to mildew growth. As such, we would always recommend installing your coir matting indoors. This will prevent any premature wear from exposure to the elements.
• Pieces of coconut husk sometimes appear in the pile, and loose pieces of coconut fibre will shed – this is completely normal and not a fault. If a husk falls out of the pile, this can be remedied by untwisting surrounding tufts to fill in the hole.
• Shedding will occur throughout the lifetime of the mat, especially in high traffic areas, although this should minimise over time. Installing your coir matting within a mat well or recess will reduce this and prevent loose fibres from spreading.
• Regular cleaning is recommended to ensure your coir matting looks at its best. Allow any wet dirt or mud to dry before using a stiff brush or upholstery vacuum attachment with gentle suction to remove debris and loose fibres. During winter, snow should be removed from the mat as soon as possible to prevent potential water damage.
• It is not recommended to wash your coir matting, as the fibres can absorb moisture. Dyed coir can also run, which can lead to uneven colouring across the surface of the mat and may stain the surrounding flooring.
• Damp maintenance can be used, providing the mat is allowed to dry fully – it’s best to blot the fibres with a clean cloth or paper towel to speed up this process. For stubborn stains or markings, a dry foam or powder cleaner is preferred.
• Do not lift and shake the coir matting, as the weight of the mat itself can lead to tearing of the rubber backing. When moving your matting, ensure that you take care and use both hands to avoid uneven distribution of weight, as this can also cause the backing to crack or tear.
• As with many natural fibres, exposure to sunlight over time can lead to bleaching or lightening of your coir mat - this may be more noticeable with coir which has been dyed to achieve an unnatural colour.
